What are Marinals?

Marinals are a species of shape-shifting aquatic humanoids that can transform into marine organisms. Each individual possesses one or more abilities, and based on how many they possess, they would be ranked higher in their civilization because of their greater capacity to adapt to harder environments. They were referred to as the explorers because of the way they liked to travel the world.

Some members of their group, who possessed numerous abilities, eventually developed a healing capacity so powerful that it essentially gave them immortality. Known as the primed ones, those immortals were chosen as rulers entrusted with defending their civilization and frequently pursued the most dangerous tasks. They grew so strong that many people, including their allies, feared them. What happened to them is unknown, but there are just only a few thousand individuals left in the cosmos.

Anatomy

Marinals are humanoid aliens who closely resemble humans in appearance with slight differences. They have no pigmentation in their skin, which gives them their pale white look. Their hair and eye color can only be monochromatic colors.

Ressecive and dominant splice

Marinals have hybrid traits of two marine animals. That's because they have two splices of marine animal genes. They have the dominant splice, which is the animal that influences their visual appearance the most. Their Marinasoul form will also look a lot like the dominant animal gene. Then there's the recessive splice, which also affects their visual appearance a bit but not as much as the dominant gene. Some Marinals can also have only one marine splice, but those individuals are less powerful, as this only happens to lower-ranked Marinals.

Fish hair

The hair of Marinals isn't exactly hair; it's more like flesh and scales mimicking the appearance of hair (think of Splatoon inklings). The apearance of hair can look like human haircut but most of the time the hair has some kind of resemblence to the marine animals they are based of on. For some Marinals, they have control of the movement of their hair and can use them like extra limbs. In some rare cases a Marinal can naturaly have fluffy hair but only of their dominant splice is a mamalian aquatic animal, like a sea llion for example.

Diet and nutrition

The diet of a Marinal depends entirely on the natural diet of the animal splices they have. The only exeption to this being that Prime Marinals are obligatory carnivores and need most of their diet to be meat or else they might risk malnutrition. The reason for this is because the abilities of Prime marinals are extremely enegry intencive.

Marinasoul

The term Marinasoul is a common term used to refer to a very early yet elusive type of creature that used to be very common millions of years ago. These creatures are splices between multiple Earth marine life and appear to have very unusual abilities, usually only one. Their origins are unknown, but it is believed that they were the earliest ancestors of marinals since their anatomy resembles the animal transformation of marinals. Many of their fossils can be found on the home planet of Marinals...

Marinasoils are creatures with advanced intelligence. Those with telepathic communication traits have been evidence that they can understand and communicate with other sapient organisms. And so they are to be taken very seriously.

The Marinafolk are the earliest type of humanoid Marinal to exist. Marinafolk tend to create their settlements in very secluded locations where no one leaves; this is because it is nearly impossible to survive on the unstable terrain of their homeworld. Leaving their safe village could be a death sentence to anyone who is completely unprepared to deal with the mystical wilderness and the shifting terrain. The Marinafolk commonly have one special ability, and in some very rare cases an individual can have two. Those with two abilities are picked as leaders of the village or are sent out into the wilderness to gather important material, to scout the area, or to contact other settlements...

Thinkinkg of remmoving this subtype tbh... The Mega is like some sort of queen. The Mega's purpose is to merge lots of genes together so that more marinals can be produced with better abilities. THe Mega Marinal is a mega fusion of muiltiple individuals who merge together to beccome a mega organism. Fusing is like some sort of ascension that some individuals sacrifise themselves for the betterment of the species. An individual sacrifice is a fully volentary act, forcing others to fuse with a mega can cause the organism to become unstable whch can lead to a terrible outcome.

Mega's have the ability to comunicate telepathically and its even rumored that they can change the genetic makeup of a single organism but th latter are simply rumors.

Artificial

The artificials are artificially created Marinals. Thanks to their artificial nature they do not have most of the restricitions and limitations that Marinals normaly have. Depending on the genetic pool used to create them, artificials can be extremely powerful. Unfortunatly they are more likely to have crippling defects which means that most Artificials tend to have a very low quality of life.

Some of the most notable traits of artificials is the fact that they can have colors other than the monochromatic scale. Artificials can also be a splice of more than two marine animals, although the more genetic splices they have, the more problems and instabilities they will have.

Acid blood: Blood of the marinal becomes extremely corrosive and can burn through any organic material. Marinals with this trait requre an advanced healing trait or else it will kill them. Those who do have the healing trait will not heal as quickly as they should due to the destructive nature of their blood.

Culture and society

Social structure

According to the Marinal civilization's hierarchical system, a person's ranking increased with the number of abilities they possessed. People in higher positions enjoyed more privileges, but they also had more responsibilities and tasks assigned to them as a result.

Language and communication

Like everyone else, marinals communicate vocally, though some find it more difficult to speak when they are in their animal form. Although few people are aware of it, Marinals have the peculiar ability to communicate with each other telepathically. For the majority of Marinals, telepathic communication is more like experiencing a certain emotion from someone else than it is like hearing actual words. Those who possess the echolocation feature are naturally better at sensing the presence of other individuals and their thoughts.

Values and beliefs

Marinals are a very purpose driven species. They all believe that each and every one of them has a purpose that needs to be fulfilled in some way. They believe that their unique skills, no matter how powerful or weak, are a gift that must be utilized to advance society. This is a basic value shared by all marinals, even though each individual may be unique in their own way and approach to life.

Fashion and Adornments

On their homeworld, Marinals would wear a large necklace adorned with diamond-shaped stones, each of which represented a different abilities. Primed ones tend to have four crystals, in very VERY rare cases a prime could have five crystals.

Marinals can have piercings, tatoos and even prostetic limbs. Marinals with the advanced healing trait cannot have any of these because their bodies will unvoluntarly heal these things away.

Traditional marinal clothing includes wearing robes and capes or ponchos. Modern Marinal clothing heavely relies on function over aesthetic. Most of it is some variotion of a bodysuit made out of a very durable material.

Marinals enjoy integrating and working with other civilizations because it not only offers them influence, but they love being usefull to others. Although after their civilisation had been wiped out, they have become extremely weary interacting with others in fear of being captured and experimentd on. Most Marinal diplomats are Primed ones.

Marinals had an extremely advanced civilisation, they hhadd a lot of technologies and they even had spece travel. It is rumored that they where SO advanced that they had managed to create time travelling technology as some million year old relics had been found on earth in the artic regions, but of course those are simply rumors...

Energy Sources

There is a giant ancient energy reactor that was built bt the very first humans who discoverd the planet but ever since humanity lost contact with the planet it has been left abandoned and unsupervised. When the Marinals evolved on that planet, the very first Explorer marinal discoverd the core and managed to somewhat figure out how to use its energy. This core is still being used by the Marinals to develop their tech but the locaion of the core is kept away from anyone.

The core uses some strange mineral that is very common on their planet, the core is somewhat unstable and releaces pulses of energy that create anomalies all over the planet to happen, it might be the very thing responcible for the powers and evolution of Marinals.

During some test they discoverd that can create time rifts which can be used for time travel. while it has been used by the Marinals for milenia, they do not know the specifics of how it works and have tried and failed to find its original creator.

Just likle Marinals' themselves, their architecture and designs used a lot or monochromatic colors. Their architecture foolows a lot of geometrical and angular patterns. The most comon shape being triangles and sometimes hexagons.

Origins

The species originates from a failed attempt at terraforming from a former colony owned by humans. It was not known what had happend to them until one day when the planet was rediscoverd, it was inhabited by humanoid beings who had seemingly evolved with traits resembling marine creatures from the Earth.

Timeline

Origins

The homeworld of the marinals was an exoplanet which had been discoverd by humans. Attempts where made to settle a base to perform some scientific studies of its strange propetis and fauna. Unfortunatly the main space shuttle crashed on its surface. Attempts had been made to recover an experimental power reactor fuled by stange matter but after many atempts the wherabouts of the creaw and the planet have been lost due to an anomaly during one of the expeditions.

Evoltion

The anomalous event triggerd something strange to happen to all the marine life that was brought from earth and they have started evolving. It is still unknown how human genome has made it into the dna of the fauna but shortly after this time marinals have started appearing. The land is in incredibly dangerous and hostile place so the early marinals barely ventured out of their secluded settlements due to how dangerous it was to travel.

Prime era

Marinals have continued to evolve into more advanced and sophisticated beings. This is when The Explorer Marinals started to become more comon amongst te population, which alowed them to travel further and expand their civilisation. Eventually they have managed to tame a powerful and volatile anomulous relic from unknown unknown origins. This relic lowed marinals to create imposible technologies including being able to travle through time...

Primed individuals are unable to reproduce naturally because the gene that grants immortality automatically renders them infertile.

No one knows exactly what caused the disaster but it is rumored to have been caused by the anomalous artifact that the Marinals used to hold dear to the suscess of their civilisation.

Species history

The original Marinals where the twins Giovanni and Amanta. They both appeared in a dream i had in 2020. Over the years they have appeared in a lot more dreams where ive been able to somewhat piece together a story about their origins and the civilisation they where from. For the longest time the species had no name, the name "Marinal" came from combining the word marine & animal together.
